The Dyslexia Group

The Group was founded in 1993 and was operating under the leadership of Pantelis Makris, inspector of Special Education of the Ministry of Education and member of C.N.T.I. Board and Dr. Yiannis Laouris, founder of C.N.T.I. Interested scientists from the public and private sector have collaborated over the years and participated in research projects, organization of numerous events and other C.N.T.I. activities. The following members deserve mentioning:

Mental Attributes Profiling System

The New Media in Learning Laboratory of the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute together with the Cyprus Dyslexia Association have collaborated between 1997 and 1999 with the Special Education Department of the Ministry of Education in Cyprus to develop and validate a battery of computer-based tests to assess learning abilities of elementary school children. The purpose of the project was to develop a screening test capable not only to predict children at risk (e.g., possible dyslexics), but moreover to equip the teacher with a profile of mental abilities relevant for choosing and designing personalized remediation programs. A further constrain was that the system should be language independent, i.e., rely on cognitive rather than language-based measures. A battery of more than 12 video-game-like tests was developed with the partial support of the Research Promotion Foundation. Many young Cypriot researchers and a number of international experts have contributed over the years to this effort.

Special mention also to those enthusiastic teachers who delivered the MAPS tests and collected the data: Triada Kyriakou, Natali Tsaggaridou, Andri Michael, Eleni Antoniou, Sofia Constantinou, Jeny Dikigoropoullou, Thoi Asvesta, Aggeliki Charalambous, Lambros Stavrou, Anastasia Georgiadou, Tatiana Koufalidou, Christina Pieridou, Marina Constantinou, Tarsi Hadjitheodoulou, Stelios Stylianou, Antonis Andreou, Margarita XXX, Panayiota Yiani, Dora Costa, Christina Theofanous, Stella Ioannidou, Maria Pieri, Demetra Demetriadou and Maria Loizou Papadopoullou.

The non-verbal group consists of language-independent tests. Snap shots of three tests are shown below:
